One day trip Sacred Valley
The trip is Sacred Valley, the daily trip is wonderful, the guide Grobert and the driver are nice. We enjoyed the full trip.
From $45.00 / Person
Experience a peaceful, easy-going alternative to the classic Vinicunca hike on our full-day Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour. Set high in the Peruvian Andes south of Cusco, Palccoyo rises to a remarkable 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level. Here you will find not one but several colorfully striped mountains, together with a striking stone forest, offering breathtaking panoramic views for far less physical effort.
Instead of the steep, tiring ascent to Vinicunca, reaching Palccoyo takes just an easy 45-minute walk on a gently rising trail. The day begins with a scenic morning drive through the South Valley, past traditional highland farming villages, historic bridges, and grazing herds of alpacas and llamas. Along the route, you will also enjoy clear views of the sacred Mount Ausangate, the tallest summit in the Cusco region.
This full-day tour offers a calm, high-altitude adventure in the Andes without the exhausting climb of the more traditional routes. A gentle walk along the ridge lets travelers of any fitness level take in three different rainbow-striped peaks from one viewpoint, explore the ancient Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras), and enjoy snowy mountain scenery far from the crowds.
Trip Details
We collect you from your Cusco hotel lobby at 4:00 AM in a comfortable tourist vehicle. A 2-hour drive south through the scenic South Valley brings us to the town of Cusipata, where a freshly made breakfast is waiting. We then continue to Checacupe, a charming country village known for its three historic bridges from three different periods of Peruvian history: Inca, Spanish colonial, and Republican. It is the perfect spot for a short restroom stop and some photos.
From Checacupe, a winding 1.5-hour drive climbs through highland farming communities where Quechua traditions are still very much alive. On arrival at the Palccoyo parking area (4,900 m / 16,076 ft), your guide gives a short safety briefing and explains the spiritual importance of the surrounding mountains.
A gentle 45-minute walk on a gradual trail leads to the main viewpoint. Instead of a single peak, Palccoyo unveils a wide panorama of three rainbow-colored mountains along with the remarkable Bosque de Piedras (Stone Forest). Take your time to photograph the scenery, wander among the rock formations, and enjoy the calm before the easy walk back to the vehicle.
We drive back down to Cusipata for a hot buffet lunch, then head back to Cusco, arriving at around 4:00 PM. We drop you off near the main square or at your hotel.
The Palccoyo tour runs every day, on any date you choose, with a minimum of 2 travelers. Entrance fees, meals, and round-trip transport are all included. Group departures average 5 people and never exceed 8.

No, it is one of the easiest high-altitude walks in Peru. The trail rises gently and gradually, with only about 45 minutes of walking in each direction. That makes it a great choice for families, first-time hikers, and anyone looking for a gentler alternative to Vinicunca.
Palccoyo is easier, quieter, and more varied. It involves a gentle 45-minute walk and reveals three colorful mountains plus a stone forest, with far fewer visitors. Vinicunca requires a much steeper 2-hour climb to a single main viewpoint and receives large crowds every day.
Yes, especially if you want a relaxed hike away from the crowds. Rather than a steep climb to see one mountain among hundreds of visitors, Palccoyo offers a short, gentle walk to three rainbow mountains, an ancient stone forest, and views of Mount Ausangate.
Just 3 km (1.8 miles) round trip. The trail has a smooth, gradual incline and takes about 45 minutes each way to reach the main viewpoint and stone forest, making this the most accessible high-mountain tour from Cusco.
Yes. Thanks to its gentle terrain and the absence of steep passes, Palccoyo is a good fit for active children, beginners, and older travelers who want spectacular mountain views without heavy physical effort.
Palccoyo sits at 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level. We recommend spending at least 2 full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour to acclimatize.
Give your body time to adjust. At this height, there is noticeably less oxygen, so spend at least two full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour. Drink plenty of water or coca tea, rest on your arrival day, and keep meals light during your first days in the region.
Your safety always comes first. Our guides are trained in first aid and high-altitude emergencies:
The dry season, from April to October, is ideal, with clear skies, dry trails, and vivid colors on the mountains. The rainy season runs from November to March and can bring rain or even snow.
The tour still runs safely in light rain or snow. Andean weather can change quickly, but during the rainy season, early-morning departures usually enjoy clear skies before the afternoon showers arrive. Our guides carry safety equipment at all times.
Yes. Along with our small-group departures (maximum 8 travelers), we offer fully private tours with flexible departure times, a pace adapted to you, and the option to make extra stops in the South Valley.
Both are included. On the morning of your tour, we pick you up from your hotel lobby in Cusco between 3:45 AM and 4:00 AM. If you arrive in Cusco before your tour, we also offer a free airport pickup to your hotel; just send us your full flight details at least 14 days in advance so our driver can meet you outside the terminal.

From the terraces of Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate, every step brings you closer to the lost city of the Incas.
Its agricultural terraces cover half the mountainside, making it a trail favorite. Its name means "Eternally Young" in Quechua.
The "Gate of the Sun" was the main entrance to Machu Picchu and gives you your first view of the citadel, a view you can only earn on the Inca Trail.
By far the most well known UNESCO world heritage site in Peru and the pinnacle of many people's visits to South America. This is where you wanted to be.
