Overview

Experience a peaceful, easy-going alternative to the classic Vinicunca hike on our full-day Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour. Set high in the Peruvian Andes south of Cusco, Palccoyo rises to a remarkable 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level. Here you will find not one but several colorfully striped mountains, together with a striking stone forest, offering breathtaking panoramic views for far less physical effort.

Instead of the steep, tiring ascent to Vinicunca, reaching Palccoyo takes just an easy 45-minute walk on a gently rising trail. The day begins with a scenic morning drive through the South Valley, past traditional highland farming villages, historic bridges, and grazing herds of alpacas and llamas. Along the route, you will also enjoy clear views of the sacred Mount Ausangate, the tallest summit in the Cusco region.

Palccoyo: Rainbow Mountains Within Everyone’s Reach

This full-day tour offers a calm, high-altitude adventure in the Andes without the exhausting climb of the more traditional routes. A gentle walk along the ridge lets travelers of any fitness level take in three different rainbow-striped peaks from one viewpoint, explore the ancient Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras), and enjoy snowy mountain scenery far from the crowds.

Tour Highlights

  • Three Rainbow Mountains: See three colorful, mineral-striped peaks from a single easy-to-reach viewpoint.
  • A Gentle High-Altitude Walk: Reach the main viewpoint in just 45 minutes on a gradual trail, with no steep climbs.
  • The Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras): Wander among towering ancient rock formations sculpted by the Andean wind.
  • Views of Ausangate: Admire sweeping views of the region’s highest snowcapped sacred mountain.

Trip Details

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Checacupe – Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – Cusco

Early Pickup, Breakfast & the Bridges of Checacupe

We collect you from your Cusco hotel lobby at 4:00 AM in a comfortable tourist vehicle. A 2-hour drive south through the scenic South Valley brings us to the town of Cusipata, where a freshly made breakfast is waiting. We then continue to Checacupe, a charming country village known for its three historic bridges from three different periods of Peruvian history: Inca, Spanish colonial, and Republican. It is the perfect spot for a short restroom stop and some photos.

Walk to the Palccoyo Viewpoint

From Checacupe, a winding 1.5-hour drive climbs through highland farming communities where Quechua traditions are still very much alive. On arrival at the Palccoyo parking area (4,900 m / 16,076 ft), your guide gives a short safety briefing and explains the spiritual importance of the surrounding mountains.

A gentle 45-minute walk on a gradual trail leads to the main viewpoint. Instead of a single peak, Palccoyo unveils a wide panorama of three rainbow-colored mountains along with the remarkable Bosque de Piedras (Stone Forest). Take your time to photograph the scenery, wander among the rock formations, and enjoy the calm before the easy walk back to the vehicle.

Buffet Lunch & Return to Cusco

We drive back down to Cusipata for a hot buffet lunch, then head back to Cusco, arriving at around 4:00 PM. We drop you off near the main square or at your hotel.

Important Info

Is the Palccoyo hike difficult?

No, it is one of the easiest high-altitude walks in Peru. The trail rises gently and gradually, with only about 45 minutes of walking in each direction. That makes it a great choice for families, first-time hikers, and anyone looking for a gentler alternative to Vinicunca.

How is Palccoyo different from Vinicunca?

Palccoyo is easier, quieter, and more varied. It involves a gentle 45-minute walk and reveals three colorful mountains plus a stone forest, with far fewer visitors. Vinicunca requires a much steeper 2-hour climb to a single main viewpoint and receives large crowds every day.

Is Palccoyo worth visiting instead of Vinicunca?

Yes, especially if you want a relaxed hike away from the crowds. Rather than a steep climb to see one mountain among hundreds of visitors, Palccoyo offers a short, gentle walk to three rainbow mountains, an ancient stone forest, and views of Mount Ausangate.

How much walking does the Palccoyo tour involve?

Just 3 km (1.8 miles) round trip. The trail has a smooth, gradual incline and takes about 45 minutes each way to reach the main viewpoint and stone forest, making this the most accessible high-mountain tour from Cusco.

Is Palccoyo suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. Thanks to its gentle terrain and the absence of steep passes, Palccoyo is a good fit for active children, beginners, and older travelers who want spectacular mountain views without heavy physical effort.

What is the altitude of Palccoyo?

Palccoyo sits at 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level. We recommend spending at least 2 full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour to acclimatize.

How can I prepare for the altitude?

Give your body time to adjust. At this height, there is noticeably less oxygen, so spend at least two full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the tour. Drink plenty of water or coca tea, rest on your arrival day, and keep meals light during your first days in the region.

What if I feel unwell on the trail?

Your safety always comes first. Our guides are trained in first aid and high-altitude emergencies:

  • Emergency Equipment: Every departure carries pulse oximeters to check oxygen levels, a full first-aid kit, and portable oxygen for immediate relief.
  • Safety Procedure: If you experience severe altitude symptoms, dizziness, or exhaustion, your guide will give you oxygen and help you descend safely to a lower altitude or back to the vehicle.

What is the best time of year to visit Palccoyo?

The dry season, from April to October, is ideal, with clear skies, dry trails, and vivid colors on the mountains. The rainy season runs from November to March and can bring rain or even snow.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The tour still runs safely in light rain or snow. Andean weather can change quickly, but during the rainy season, early-morning departures usually enjoy clear skies before the afternoon showers arrive. Our guides carry safety equipment at all times.

Can I book a private Palccoyo tour?

Yes. Along with our small-group departures (maximum 8 travelers), we offer fully private tours with flexible departure times, a pace adapted to you, and the option to make extra stops in the South Valley.

How do hotel pickup and the airport transfer work?

Both are included. On the morning of your tour, we pick you up from your hotel lobby in Cusco between 3:45 AM and 4:00 AM. If you arrive in Cusco before your tour, we also offer a free airport pickup to your hotel; just send us your full flight details at least 14 days in advance so our driver can meet you outside the terminal.

Is there a briefing before the tour?

No office briefing is needed for this day trip. Instead:

  • Digital Briefing: The day before, we send you your pickup time, a weather update, and packing reminders by WhatsApp or email.
  • Trailhead Briefing: Before you start walking, your guide explains the route, safety guidelines, and how to handle the altitude.

Can I leave my luggage at your office?

Yes, free of charge. You can leave your main luggage at our secure Cusco office or at your hotel. Space in the vehicle is limited, so bring only a small daypack with warm layers, water, and personal items.

How do I book the Palccoyo tour?

Booking online takes two simple steps:

  • Step 1: Click BOOK NOW and fill out the reservation form with each traveler’s full name (exactly as on the passport), gender, passport number, date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY), and nationality.
  • Step 2: Pay a deposit of $20 USD per person so we can secure your entrance tickets and transport.

How do I pay the remaining balance?

We prefer cash, but online payment is also possible. Paying in US dollars or Peruvian soles at our Cusco office before your tour avoids card fees, and there are several ATMs around the main square. Online payments by VISA or PayPal carry a 5.5% processing fee.

Can I change my tour date?

Usually, yes. Date changes depend on ticket availability and transport. Requests made at least 48 hours before departure can normally be handled at no extra cost, while changes requested less than 24 hours before the tour may involve a rebooking fee.

Do I need my original passport?

Yes. Community officials and road checkpoints check original passports against the official tourist lists.

  • New passport? Send us copies of both your old and new passports before the tour, and we will update your registration for a $25 USD fee.
  • No-fee option: Bring both your old and new passports on the tour to show at checkpoints.
  • Please note: Local regulations do not allow you to join the tour without a valid original passport that matches your booking.

Should I tip the guide and driver?

Tipping is optional but always appreciated. If you are happy with the service, a tip is a common and meaningful way to support your local guide, driver, and their families.

Is Short Inca Trail Machu Picchu a sustainable operator?

Yes. We are a local, responsible tour operator. We follow international environmental and social standards to protect the local ecosystem, apply strict Leave No Trace principles, and support rural Andean communities while respecting their heritage and traditions.

Amazing experience with Sam travels

I had the best experience with Sam travels, we had an amazing time doing the 4d Salkantay trek, we had the best weather. Specifically want to mention Josep what an amazing cool guy he was. A real leader, great story teller, motivator and made you feel like you were taking on something special. Secondly another special mention for Andres and his catering team. The food was amazing, real nutritious and energising for the long trekking days.

Finally the horse man Donato, he managed to get all of our fresh clothing to the next camp very efficiently. Highly recommend a trip with this company.

Great experience at short Inca trail

We did the 2-day Short Inca Trail and it was a fantastic experience! Our guide, Fredy Zapata, was excellent. He told us so much about the history of the Incas and the region, and was able to answer every question we had. He did a great job and made the whole experience really enjoyable.

The highlight was definitely arriving at the Sun Gate and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time. An unforgettable experience that we would highly recommend!

Unforgettable Salkantay Experience with Sam Travel

We did the Salkantay Trek with SAM Travel and couldn’t have been happier with our choice! Our guide, Josep, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and passionate. He answered every single one of our questions about nature, history and Peruvian culture honestly, even better than ChatGPT! ;) We especially loved being in such a small group. It made the whole experience feel much more personal, relaxed and authentic.. The accommodations throughout the trek were excellent, and the food prepared by Andrés was absolutely outstanding. We were honestly surprised by the quality and variety of the meals, especially considering we were in the middle of the mountains. We spent a long time researching different companies before booking the Salkantay Trek, and choosing SAM Travel was definitely the right decision. Everything was extremely well organized, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. We would 100% recommend SAM Travel, and especially Josep and Andrés, to anyone planning to do the Salkantay Trek!

Rainbow Mt and Lake Titikaka

For the second part of our Classic Inca Trail package, we hiked Rainbow Mountain and then toured the islands of Lake Titikaka. On this portion of our trip package, we were able to spend a day/night/morning with a local family on Isla Amantaní. What an incredible experience to really got to understand the culture! Our guide Christian (Chris) from Sam’s Travel was an incredible resource helping us to not only navigate where to be, but also helped us converse with the local community. In addition to being an excellent guide and very knowledgeable, Christian was an AMAZING photographer for our group so we are all in all of the photos!

The Ultimate Birthday Bucket List Experience – The Dream Team of Liz and Abdul!

I recently checked a major dream off my birthday bucket list with an incredible 3-day tour of the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Rainbow Mountain. This experience was everything I hoped for and more, largely because of the outstanding duo of Liz Montesinos and Abdul. If you are booking with SAM Travel, I cannot recommend this pair enough—they work so perfectly together as a team that it made our entire journey feel seamless and special.

Liz Montesinos is an absolutely wonderful guide who brought so much heart to our experience. What stood out most was her intense passion for her culture and her country; she doesn’t just share facts, she shares her heritage with a deep pride that makes the history of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu truly come alive. She was also incredibly attentive, always making sure we were comfortable and helping us capture the most stunning photos of our milestone trip.

While Liz provided the incredible storytelling and cultural depth, Abdul was the perfect partner behind the wheel. He is a fantastic driver who made us feel completely safe and relaxed, even on the winding mountain roads. Seeing them work in tandem allowed us to just focus on the magic of Peru. They truly operate as a "dream team," and their combined energy and professionalism made this a birthday I will never forget. If you want the best experience possible, be sure to ask for Liz and Abdul together!

The Inca Trail with the best guide.

We did the 3 night, 4 day Inca Trail with Sam Travel Peru and our guide and organiser was Josep Quiñonez Alvarez. It was a fantastic experience and Josep made it extra special. He is extremely experienced so was able to read the group very well and make adjustments to the route when necessary. His knowledge of the Incan civilisation was excellent and he was able to convey it in superb English with passion and enthusiasm. Despite the ardours of the trail we had a great 4 days, which undoubtedly was definitely down to Josef.

An amazing adventure

Sam Travel Peru were brilliant from start to finish on the 4 day classic Inca Trail. They were well organised which made for a smooth and enjoyable experience. The guides Henry and Jimmy were amazing, so fun and helpful. They were informative about Inca history and really knew how to keep the group energised and having a good time. The chef (Mario) came up with some delicious food, pretty incredible at such remote locations. So thankful for the porters too, who made the experience so much more enjoyable by carrying everything to make camp each night (as well as our duffle bags). An all round spectacular experience, so grateful to a wonderful team.
