FAQS
Can I bring a professional camera on the Inca Trail?
Yes, you can bring professional cameras, mirrorless cameras, GoPros, and phones. Cameras are completely allowed on the trail and at Machu Picchu, and many hikers bring photography gear to capture the landscapes and archaeological sites.
However, drones are generally prohibited inside Machu Picchu and along the Inca Trail unless you have special authorization from Peruvian authorities.
What is the best time of day for photos on the Inca Trail?
Early mornings usually offer the best lighting conditions. Sunrise over the mountains creates softer colors, fewer harsh shadows, and incredible cloud formations around the Andes.
The stretch near Dead Woman’s Pass and the arrival at the Sun Gate are especially beautiful during the first hours of the day.
Afternoons can still be great for photos, but weather conditions often become less predictable, especially during the rainy season.
Do I need to protect my camera from rain?
Absolutely. Weather in the Andes changes quickly, even during the dry season. Rain covers, waterproof bags, and microfiber cloths are highly recommended to protect your equipment from moisture, dust, and mud.
Many hikers also carry lightweight dry bags inside their backpacks for extra protection.
Are phones good enough for Inca Trail photos?
Modern smartphones are more than capable of capturing amazing images on the Inca Trail. Many travelers now complete the trek using only their phones for photos and videos.
The key is battery management. Cold temperatures and long hiking days drain batteries quickly, so bringing a power bank is essential.
Can I charge my camera or phone during the trek?
On the Classic Inca Trail, charging opportunities are extremely limited. Campsites generally do not offer reliable electricity access.
For this reason, carrying fully charged spare batteries and portable power banks is one of the most important photography tips for the trek.
